Summer concert

Brahms and Vaughan Williams - Sat June 16th 2012

lillies

Let all the world in every corner sing!

Presenting a concert of much-loved choral works full of lyrical beauty and magnificent tunes. Perhaps inspired by the death of his mother, Brahms’s ‘German’ Requiem comprises words of comfort from the Bible and the Apocrypha, and is one of the glories of the Romantic choral repertoire, displaying a rich harmonic tapestry. Our performance features a rarely used piano duet accompaniment written by Brahms himself.

Vaughan Williams wrote his ‘Five Mystical Songs’ in 1911, to poems by George Herbert, a poet who ‘recognised in music not a science only but a divine voice’. Here, religious sentiments are expressed in music of much romantic ardour. This evening we are using an accompaniment for small string ensemble and piano.

Andrea Ryder - soprano
Terence Ayebare - baritone
